Britney Could Have Given More at the VMA’s

The much-anticipated opening performance at the VMAs was Britney Spears, who kicked off the event with a dance number set to her new track, “Gimme More.” Britney had been hyped by MTV as the big surprise performance, with a last-minute press release going out to media outlets to confirm that yes, the pop star was hoping to make this her big comeback performance. And, Britney didn’t pull an Amy Winehouse, and actually did show up to the event (much to the relief of many an MTV exec, I’m guessing), but it didn’t look like she brought any of the old Britney with her. Despite the fact that she was flaunting her trademark abs in an outfit consisting of some tiny hot-pants, a bra-top and some go-go boots, Britney really didn’t look as if her heart were into the dance number she had been working on and instead appeared to be merely lip-synching carefully as she walked up and down the stage. Seriously, the poor thing actually looked like she were counting, “1,2,3,4 and turn and step,” over and over in her head. When People magazine interviewed rapper, Common, about his reaction to the performance, he pretty much said what all of us were thinking:

“That could have been better. She needed to focus more. She looked nervous and I think the pressure got to her.”

“I think it didn’t seem like she wanted to be there. There wasn’t any spark, it didn’t feel like life was there.”

Gimme, gimme MORE. Gimme MORE. Gimme, gimme MORE. Sorry, but seriously, I’m going to need way MORE than that to call this anything near a comeback, Brit. Because really, if that’s Britney, bitches, then I’m sorely disappointed.
