Celebrity Mothers Set The Bar High

It can be intimidating for new mothers these days.  In addition to the whole new world of taking care of a newborn and maintaining a family, there is this emerging phenomenon of “have it all” mothers in Hollywood.  Every time you turn on the television or hop on the Internet there are constant images of celebrity children (both biological and adopted) alongside their enormously successful movie star moms.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie, Katie Holmes and Gwen Stefani top the list of celeb mommies that appear to have paired career success with motherhood. On the other side of that coin are experts that say that such a perception is unrealistic.

University of Melbourne gender studies expert Meredith Nash said the glamour of the red carpet and women’s magazines did not reflect the realities of pregnancy and motherhood. “Motherhood for them is just about gushing about how wonderful it is.” Practical Parenting magazine reports that it’s “hard not to feel cynical when yet another Hollywood star claims to be a ‘working mom “.

The thing that non-celebrity moms forget is that these movie and pop stars have around-the-clock assistants for every whim or worry.  Until there is a personal assistant for every mother, there will continue to be a disconnect between the celeb and non-celeb mother.

At the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is that moms and kids stay healthy and happy.  Sure, that happiness comes a bit more readily when the dilemma centers on which Bentley to take to soccer practice.  But Bentleys can’t hug back the way kids do.
