While her attempts at an appeal or pardon are still hanging in the balance, Paris Hilton received good news yesterday (May 10) - with word that she may spend far less than 45 days in the county lock-up.

Hilton, sentenced last week, “may spend only three weeks or less behind bars because of a state requirement that grants inmates time off for good behavior and because of overcrowding in the system,” Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore told The Associated Press.

"It’s possible that it could be 21 days, 23 days. It’s a complicated formula that the state sets down. It’s possible that she could do less time,” Whitmore said.

As for overcrowding, “our jail is bursting at the seams and some female inmates have been released after serving only 10 percent of their sentence,” Whitmore added.

Michelle Rodriguez of ‘Lost’ acts as a past example of the best case scenario for Paris - assuming she doesn’t win her appeal or get pardoned by The Terminator. Last year, Rodriguez was sentenced to 60 days in jail for violating probation after her drunken driving arrest in Hawaii. She was released in hours because of overcrowding.

Whitmore was sure to point out that Rodriguez’s case was not celebrity-specific, telling the LA Times, “Hilton’s time will be determined when she is booked into the county system. She will be treated like any other inmate who’s classified as a low-level security risk.”

In the meantime, Paris has been busy with her appeal and her fans have posted a petition on the Internet urging Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon her. She’s also rooting for anyone and everyone in Los Angeles county to get arrested and keep those beds full!
