You Spin Me Round: Spoon is Back with ‘Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga’

Spoon 051507

After Spoon released the nearly-flawless (according to me) Gimme Fiction, almost two years ago, the Austin, TX band took a short break from the studio. They have since stepped back into the studio, recently announcing a July 10th release of their sixth studio album, titled Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. The band debuted new material at SXSW, and left fans salivating; according to critics who took in the performance, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga should be amazing and in a similar vein as their other albums.

I was not lucky enough to see the SXSW performance; however, I got my first taste of the upcoming disc with this week's leak of "The Ghost of You Lingers." The percussion-free tune features Britt Daniel's echoing vocals and a repetitive piano line. Although not a typical Spoon hit, it gives us a hint of things to come this summer.

If you've never heard of the band, give Gimme Fiction or 2002's Kill the Moonlight a listen; Spoon epitomizes catchy indie rock. So catchy, in fact, you might have been tapping along without even knowing it; "Scrubs" and "The O.C." both featured Spoon songs in several episodes, and the 2006 Will Ferrell movie, "Stranger Than Fiction," featured five previously-un-released Spoon songs. With all that exposure, it's possible you're a fan and you just don't know it.

The track listing and this weeks free MP3 are after the jump.
